A Sunday Neighborhood Guide with Kids in Harlem, NYC

An 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Sunday Itinerary

Looking for an easy way to spend the day in Harlem with your little one? This family-friendly itinerary combines a classic NYC breakfast, outdoor play, storytelling, hands-on art and a kid-approved lunch—all within a walkable area.

Best for: Ages 2–9 Best day: Sunday Estimated cost: Approximately $25–$50 for one adult and one child, depending on food choices Getting around: Walking and stroller-friendly sidewalks, although some park paths may be hilly

8–8:45 a.m. | Start With Breakfast at Bo’s Bagels

📍 235 West 116th Street 💳 Paid

Start the morning with freshly made bagels, breakfast sandwiches and flavored cream cheeses from this neighborhood favorite.

A simple bagel is easy for little hands, while parents can grab coffee and a breakfast sandwich before the walking begins.

Bo’s Bagels opens daily at 7 a.m., making it a dependable early-morning stop.

Parent tip: Seating may be limited during busy periods. Consider taking your breakfast to Morningside Park for a casual picnic.

9–10:15 a.m. | Morning Play at Morningside Park

📍 Enter near West 117th Street and Morningside Avenue 💚 Free

Let the kids run, climb and play before the museum portion of the day.

Morningside Playground has space for active play and public restrooms with changing tables. The surrounding park also offers trees, walking paths and plenty of room for children who need to move.

Parent tip: Bring wipes, water and a change of clothes. Parts of Morningside Park are hilly, so use the entrance closest to the playground if you have a stroller.

10:15–10:45 a.m. | Walk Toward 125th Street

Take a relaxed walk north toward the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Use this time for a snack, diaper change or stroller rest before the museum opens. Along the way, children can take in the neighborhood’s murals, architecture, shops and energy.

11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. | Studio Sunday at the Studio Museum in Harlem

📍 144 West 125th Street 💚 Free—advance tickets recommended

Every Sunday, the Studio Museum offers free admission and family programming.

11:30 a.m.–12 p.m. | Storytime

Families can enjoy a 30-minute storytime celebrating books by Black children’s authors and illustrators. The stories connect with the artwork and themes found throughout the Museum.

12–12:30 p.m. | Drop-In Artmaking

Stay after storytime for a hands-on project inspired by the exhibitions. Children can experiment with different art materials and create something to take home.

Quiet spaces, ear defenders, fidgets and adaptive art materials are available.

Parent tip: Admission is free, but tickets are required. Reserve in advance and arrive early enough to check your stroller and use the restroom before Storytime begins.

12:30–1:30 p.m. | Lunch at Harlem Shake

📍 100 West 124th Street 💳 Paid

Walk around the corner for burgers, fries, grilled cheese, chicken tenders and milkshakes in a fun, retro Harlem setting.

The children’s menu includes smaller, familiar options, while adults can choose from beef, turkey, chicken and plant-based meals.

Parent tip: Order one shake with two straws if you want to include a treat without creating a full afternoon sugar situation!

1:30–3 p.m. | Finish With Play at Marcus Garvey Park

📍 Madison Avenue between East 120th and 124th Streets

💚 Free

End the day with unstructured outdoor play at Marcus Garvey Park.

Children can climb, slide and burn off their remaining energy while adults relax nearby. If your child is tired, take a gentle walk through the park instead and enjoy the final part of the afternoon at a slower pace.

Parent tip: This is a flexible final stop. Stay for the full 90 minutes or head home early if your little one is ready for a nap.
